Q: Does your program
require you to go to a gym? Do I have to purchase any special
equipment if I want to train at home? Are the exercises easy enough
for people over 50 to do if they haven't been doing much strength
training?
A: No, you don't have to
join a gym if you don't want to. In fact, many people start working
out in their own homes with little or no equipment, and they often
join a gym later or create their own little "home gym."
The Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle program has 4
important components and two of them are exercise:
1. Cardio training
2. Strength training
3. Mental training
4. Balanced nutrition from natural food
The cardio training component could be as simple as
walking and that doesn't require any equipment at all, unless you
prefer to use a treadmill. In fact, walking is often the best form
of aerobic exercise if you're a beginner, if you have a lot of
weight to lose, or if you're older. As you become more fit, you can
move up to more intense forms of cardio that allow you to burn more
calories in less time.
Stairclimbers, elliptical machines, treadmills,
rowers, bicycles and certain classes or video programs are all great
for fat loss and any one of these of these can be incorporated into
this program. One of the great features of Burn The Fat, Feed The
Muscle is the flexibility it allows in your exercise choices instead
of locking you into one mode of training or insisting that one
method is the best. What's most important is that you choose an
aerobic activity that you enjoy and that you're willing to make a
regular part of your lifestyle.
The Burn The Fat program also recommends a strength
training component and you do need to learn how to do some strength
training exercises if you aren't already. This could be as simple as
some basic dumbbell exercises in your own home. Some people even
start with no equipment, just bodyweight exercises such as push ups,
pull ups, dips, bodyweight squats, bodyweight lunges and abdominal
work.
Most equipment advertised on TV infomercials is
complete garbage. Do you know what the best and most versatile piece
of equipment in the world is? Dumbbells! Dumbbells are inexpensive,
they don't take up much space, and they give you literally hundreds
of exercise variations you can do right in your own home. Another
great benefit of dumbbells is that the exercises are simple, easy to
learn, and you can start with very light weights - at any age or
experience level - and slowly build up.
Joining a gym is not a requirement, but I do highly
recommend it, especially once you move past the beginner stage. The
advantage of joining a gym is the huge variety of equipment and
programs you'll have available, as well as a motivational,
supportive, instructional atmosphere.
I often hear beginners say, "I have to get in shape
first before I join a gym." That may sound funny and completely
backwards, but I do understand. Many people are intimidated with
health clubs. They think only "buff" people go to the gym, but it's
really the other way around - people have "buffed" bodies BECAUSE
they've been going to the gym! It helps to realize that everyone has
to start somewhere, and everyone is "out of shape" in the beginning.
If you choose not to join a club, that's fine, but my
recommendation then would be to slowly begin adding some extra
equipment to your "home gym" setup as you become more advanced. You
could add a barbell set, a fully adjustable bench, squat rack and
possibly a cable-pulley apparatus with a high and a low pulley. You
can often find a multi-purpose home gym that combines these features
into one unit.
Ultimately, where you train is your personal decision
- the important thing is that you DO train and that you understand
the importance of the powerful synergy created between nutrition,
cardio and strength training. Dieting - without the exercise - just
doesn't work. In fact, it can destroy your metabolism and actually
make you fatter in the long run!
Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle shows you how to
implement nutrition, cardio and weight training all into one simple,
comprehensive, step by step plan. Combined with the right mental
approach and motivational tools, you have yourself a winning formula
that always succeeds, regardless of where you choose to work out!
